Matt Otero of Hamel House Press uses hand-carved linocut and woodcut methods to do relief printmaking that captures the essence of a subject by “carving” away the immaterial. However, maintaining the human element is essential. What lead him to relief printmaking was the idea that even though people have used the method for thousands of years, it still feels honest and new because the artist’s hand is right on the surface for all to see.
